Things To Do in Sunset Park
Author: Karen Carter
Located south of Park Slope, Sunset Park is a neighborhood full of diversity and interesting sights. The 25 acre park for which it was named, has breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, Staten Island and New Jersey. The park also offers basketball and handball courts, an Olympic size swimming pool in the hotter months, a sand volleyball court, nature trails and a September 11th memorial.
Since 1999 the Sunset Park BID has hosted a 15 block street festival in early September. The festival offers ethnic food, ethnic music, vendors, massages, pony rides, and games. The kids can enjoy free face painting, bounce houses, balloons, popcorn, cotton candy and much more.
Sunset Park also offers a Tree Lighting Ceremony the first Thursday after Thanksgiving. The kids can have their picture taken with Santa in front of the 18 foot Christmas tree and the children will receive a goody bag. Choirs from local schools provide hours of holiday music and as night falls the tree is lit! Along with this begins the Holiday trolley which will stop at every bus stop of the B63 bus for four hours each day throughout the holiday season. Santa will be aboard handing out candy canes to the little ones.
If you are looking for a place to grab a tasty meal, Sunset Park has many to choose from. Authentic Asian and Hispanic cuisine can be found throughout the neighborhood. La Fe boasts a wide variety of Latin-Caribbean cuisine. Ba Xuyen is a Vietnamese sandwich shop. Super Pollo Latino is a Peruvian hot spot known for its rotisserie chicken. East Harbor is said to have the best dim sum. There is no shortage of choices and most places are open late.
If nightlife is more your thing Sunset Park has a variety to offer in this department as well. Xstasy Night Club is a great place to go dancing, Irish Haven has friendly staff and delicious burgers as well as a well stocked bar. The Spot Bar & Lounge boasts a popular karaoke scene and Brooklyn's Tiki Bar has a DJ and outdoor seating for those warm summer nights.
