Sunset Park Demographics

Sunset Park, New York is a neighborhood in the part of New York known as Brooklyn. It is located on the Western side of Brooklyn. The city gained its name from the 24-acre park that is located within its boundaries. The area is a unique and diverse blend situated in the middle of one of the most famous cities in the United States.

Sunset Park is incredibly diverse. Its residents come from Puerto Rico, Mexico, South America, and China. There is also a sizable population of both Norwegians and Indians that call Sunset Park home. "Brooklyn's Chinatown" is located in Sunset Park and draws many tourists each year for the local food and interesting sights.

The area that is called Sunset Park was originally settled by the Dutch in the 1640's. The area was primarily an agricultural hub until the 1830s when it began to develop and become more of a city. According to the 2000 United States census, there are around 120,441 people living in Sunset Park. The ratio of males to females is almost completely equal. The median age of the residents in Sunset park is 30.8 years old. 18% of residents were under the age of 18 and 73% were over 18. 9% of the citizens were over the age of 65. There are approximately 30,000 residential units situated in Sunset Park.

The median income in Sunset park is $30,000 and more than 26% of residents live below the poverty line. The population is roughly 42% Hispanic or Latino, 36% white, 29% Asian, 3.2% African-American, and 24% were of another race or ethnicity entirely.
